This is the Ol’ Sports Talker saying that January has flown by. Now more than ever we needs sports!

With so many people unemployed, (the Ol’ Sports Talker included) have seen their hours cut back, now more than ever we need sports! During World War II, the baseball commissioner went to President Roosevelt and asked him if Major League Baseball should suspend playing. President Roosevelt responded that more than ever, the nation needed sports. (Side note: The Indianapolis 500 did shut down for the war years.)

From high school sports to the big leagues we need them more now than ever. No matter how bad you have it right now, just think of the Chicago Cubs and you will feel better! Year after year after year the golden ring is right there for the Cubbies, only to see it just inches from their grasp or to get it, then drop it. Or think about the Tampa Bay Rays. Since they came into the league they were cellar dwellers. They dropped the “devil” from their name and went to the World Series.

Now we have the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL. They flirted with good teams while back in St. Louis, but never won a division title. Then they became the Phoenix Cardinals then the Arizona Cardinals. Now they have made it to the Super Bowl! (The Ol’ Sports Talker’s head says the Steelers will win, but his heart is with the Cardinals.) Whoever wins, you can count on the world tuning in.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, and you can’t have a conversation without bringing up the commercials. The Super Bowl is the only event that has a TV show devoted to the commercials. (We watch a TV show about commercials, paid for by commercials.) I’m as guilty as the next person though. Even if the game is a blowout, I keep watching, just for the commercials. The next day the Super Bowl commercials are all over the internet. (My favorite all time was the EDS “Heardin’ Cats”, followed closely by Apple‘s “1984“.)

If you have read my blogs, you know I can’t stop without mentioning my favorite college basketball player, Stephen Curry of Davidson College. Call me a homer or a ball washer, I love to see this kid play ball. I’m not the only one. Seems that Davidson was taking on conference rival Samford today. Normally, Samford Bulldogs draws 800-100 people per home game. Davidson & Curry come to town and they pack their 5,000 seat arena. I don’t feel bad in writing that Curry maybe the Tiger Woods of college basketball.

This is the Ol’ Sports Talker saying “Go Team!” and be, an athletic supporter!
