Here it is the middle of July and it’s hard to believe we are almost ½ way through Summer. The Ol’ Sports Talker is having a good Summer!

Nightly local news. I almost hardly watch it for sports. This about it. They have maybe 3 minutes to do their sports. By the time they hit a top story and run down the scores, TV sports is over. Even ESPN Sports center will only have maybe 30 seconds worth of video of you favorite team.

Then there’s the local newspaper. 8 pages of sports with 4 of them advertisements. 1 page of scores and stats and that leaves 3 pages for real sports. They MIGHT have 1 beat writer followed by wire sports stories. Rarely do I EVER incorporate anything from the paper into my blog, or shows. (The vice-versa has happened though.) papers will pick up on Sports Talk Radio for their stories.

The whole point of this was that I actually read something in the paper that got me thinking. Brandon and Kareem Rush of the Indiana Pacers! They are brothers. I had to think when the last set of brothers played for the same NBA team. Sure you have it in other sports. Ken and George Brett of the Kansas City Royals, Dom & Joe DiMaggio of the Yankees. Dizzy and Daffy Dean pitched for 1934 World Champion Cardinals. Not sure if Gaylord and Jim Perry and the Niekro brothers, Phil and Joe pitched for the same teams. (Come to think about it, I think the Neikro brothers may have pitched for the Atlanta Braves.) And the Boone boys, Aaron and Bret, if my old memory serves me well, they did both play for the Cincinnati Reds.

I thought back to my youth. Back when the Sacramento Kings were the Cincinnati Royals. Back to the end of the “Big O” Oscar Robertson’s career. Back to, Tom and
Dick Van Arsdale. Only Tommy played for the Royals. Both were born in Indianapolis, both played for Emmerich Manual High School, and both Played for IU! They only played the same team, the Phoenix Suns, during their last season in the NBA. Now you have the Lopez twins, Brook and Robin, maybe one day they will get a chance to play together in the NBA.

The other point I was trying to make, was that for real sports you have to tune to sports talk radio. Personally I think that the local sports talk radio is better than the national. Why? National sports talk is going to talk about the hot topic of the day. Local not only gets to discus that, but what is important locally. Do you think Rome or Cowherd will really discuss the Indianapolis Indians or Ice? Or how about the flat track roller derby team that Indy has?

If your sports station only carries ESPN radio or Sporting New Radio, call to write them. Tell them that they need to set aside some time during the day for local sports talk radio! Would you rather discuss hours upon hours of Brett Favre or who looks good going into the Colts Preseason? Tony Stewart ditching his last season at Joe Gibbs Racing or how the Pacers’ rookies looked during the Summer league. (Okay, that maybe an unfair comparison.) IF your Sports Station only offers national shows, let them know you want more local sports talk! I guarantee you will get more than 3 pages in the papers and 3 minutes on the local news.

Speaking of Tony Stewart does he know that his now partner, Gene Hass, is in jail and serving time? Of course, Rick Hendrick went to jail, so I don’t know if that really means anything. I wonder if Joe Gibbs is getting tired of his drivers leaving early. Dale Jarrett did the same thing, years ago. Kyle Busch is hot, maybe he will stick around for his contract.

Until next time, this is the Ol’ Sports Talker saying, be and athletic supporter!
